How to Distinguish a Reputable Breeder

While the AKC is the largest and most prestigious of the kennel registries, it doesn't guarantee quality. Here are our personal opinions on what constitutes a reputable breeder.

 INTENTIONS, EDUCATION and BREED STANDARD

Reputable breeders breed with specific intentions; often agonizing over their decisions when choosing the perfect mate for their girls. Decisions aren't made on a cute face or that the stud dog lives down the street. Reputable breeders always breed for themselves first and foremost- this "selfishness" is a blessing for you the pet owner, as it ensures you are getting the best possible puppy in terms of health, temperament, trainability and type.

Reputable breeders further their education- we are always striving to improve our knowledge and our bloodlines. This takes a considerable amount of time and money. Breeding exceptional Labradors is a passion, not a form of income!

We are stewards of the breed, and we keep the breed standard in mind at all times. Also remember the Labrador Retriever only comes in three colors- Black, Yellow and Chocolate- any other color is a disqualifying fault. Reputable breeders regularly attend AKC sanctioned events (conformation, field trials, agility, rally, obedience and CGC). If you aren't judging your stock against the standard, how will you know where you are going and what you need to improve upon? Ask your breeder about the performance events they attend.

POINTS TO CONSIDER

* Why is this person a breeder in the first place?

Most reputable breeders are passionate hobbyists- they are overwhelmingly dedicated to the breed.  Reputable breeders are stewards- not just owners and Labrador lovers.

*What are their goals and ambitions in this hobby?

Reputable breeders have a goal in mind- breeding and training a Master Hunter, a Westminster or Potomac Winner, an Agility or Obedience  Title, an AKC Championship. These accolades aren't easily obtained, and must constantly be in the back of the breeder's mind. Breeding Labradors because you "love them" isn't good enough.

*Ask your breeder why they chose a specific stud dog for their bitch. What are they trying to improve upon?

Reputable breeders always breed with intention (it isn’t for profit; this is a passion, not a career). If you aren't breeding with intention- why are you breeding?
